Joybells School and Orphanage, Dehradun, India
Joybells school and orphanage is located in Dehradun in the foothills of the Himalayas about 250 km north of New Delhi.
In 1983, whilst living in Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim in Northern India, Joy started to care for small children whose mothers were having to work as labourers and had no possibility, at that time, of caring for their children themselves. When word spread of the work Joy was doing other destitute women starting bringing their babies to Joy. She took these children into her home, fed them, clothed them and began to educate them. This was the beginning of Joybells.
Over 20 years Joybells, in Gangtok, grew to become a school for 400 with an orphanage for 50.
In 2000 the decision was made for Joy to leave Gangtok - the remoteness of Sikkim making the everyday running of the school virtually impossible - so land was found near the city of Dehradun in the foothills of the Himalayas and the new Joybells was begun.
The first of the new buildings has been opened and is home to over 60 children. Work is reaching completion on two of the main buildings that already provide accommodation for the children but will allow for more staff to be accommodated as well as a new medical wing.
It has always been the case that children of all faiths have been welcomed by Joybells. Eventually there will be a home for about 200 children which will also be their primary school up to the age of 12. For their secondary education the children will go to other schools in the area. The orphanage will be home for the children throughout their schooling. Joy's aim is to give the children in her care a Christian home and a really outstanding education.
